Required reading

The Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther, preferably the version translated by Henry Cole (Available from the Wandering Bookseller or free here) – Continue the ‘Discussion: Third Part’ by reading Sections 143 to 147.

My summary

Today Luther continues giving his proofs against free will from Romans.

Firstly Luther answers the objection that Paul is speaking of only ceremonial law when he speaks of the works of the law as dead.  Luther explains that Paul is teaching that people are dead in terms of both moral and ceremonial law and therefore do not have free will.

Then Luther goes on to expound Romans 3:21-26 to show that we are all dead in sin.  He starts with verses 21-22 ‘But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference’ (Romans 3:21-22).

What grabbed me

I liked Luther’s tactic for understanding Paul’s teaching in Romans: But let us bring forward Paul himself, who is the best interpreter of himself. He saith, Gal. iii. 10, “As many as are of the works of the law, are under the curse; for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” You see that Paul here, where he is urging the same point as he is in his epistle to the Romans, and in the same words, speaks, wherever he makes mention of the works of the law, of all the laws that are written in the Book of the Law.

There is no better interpreter of Scripture than Scripture.
