Required reading

The Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther, preferably the version translated by Henry Cole (Available from the Wandering Bookseller or free here) – Continue the ‘Discussion: First Part’ by reading sections 53 to 64.

My summary

Today Luther continues to argue against Erasmus’ interpretation of Scripture by giving his own expositions.

The passages that are dealt with come from:
(i) Genesis 4:7;
(ii) Deuteronomy 30:19;
(iii) Isaiah 1:19;
(iv) Jeremiah 15:19;
(v) Malachi 3:7;
(vi) Ezekiel 18:23.

Basically in all these passages Luther consistently objects to Erasmus confusing what one ‘ought’ to do with what one ‘can’ do.  Or in other words, confusing law with gospel.

What grabbed me

I liked this point from Luther: ‘What need is there of the Spirit, what need of Christ, what need of God, if “Free-will” can overcome the motions of the mind to evil!

If we can do everything ourselves, God is not needed.
